Rated 4.3 out of 5 by 32 reviewers.
Rated 3 out of 5 by It's OK but i prefer SRAM X9 One of my bikes is now fitted with an XT setup as a change from my SRAM X0 and X9 and i think the XT are an all round OK system but I prefer the performance of the SRAM setup. Overall I do think Shimano are good and the XT shifters have a couple of good points but X9 just has the edge with shifting speed, smoothness and the new Type II has far less chain slap. I wont be taking the XT off but when it needs replacing I will revert back to SRAM. Overall it's decent stuff but personal preference. If you are sat there thinking X9 or XT i'd click on the X9. 28 April 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Great value for money I bought this because my ageing XTR mech had been hammered a few times and the spring wasn't as strong as it used to be and It was £28 for new jockey wheels. The spring on the XT mech is better and because it shifts backwards it keeps my chain taut at all times it hasn't come off yet (which it would do going down hills fast on my XC bike). 05 March 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Good THE REVERSE GEAR XT FOR ME AND BETWEEN THE ABSOLUTE BEST QUALITY AND PRICE HAS CHANGED AN ACCURATE. ABSOLUTELY TO TRY 01 January 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Cyclocross? Yes! Using this on a Foundry Auger; Centaur 10 speed shifters, Ultegra 9 speed cassette, Jtek ShiftMate model #2. Very pleased. 21 June 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Awesome Brilliant mech, this is the perfect solution for me and off road riding. Get caught out by a sudden rise and just fire in the lower gears. It will shift straight into them with little complaint even under heavy load and the wrong cadence. Usual Shimano quality, robust and easy to set up for smooth shifts. Just hope Shimano continue to make them will be distraught if they stop. 06 June 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent Rear Mech What a great rear mech i liked everything about this derailleur,i have ran it for about a year now with no problems, i found it easy to set up, it shifts perfect, love the rapid rise, And £50 i felt like i had ripped off chain reaction cycles. so good both my bikes have one. 30 September 2012
Rated 1 out of 5 by Low Normal/Rapid Rise Arguably, this is one of the best looking Shimano derailleurs...ever! However, what were they thinking when some one came up with the idea of Rapid Rise? What may appear to be a good idea in theory, does not always happen in reality. I cannot imagine anyone putting up with how lousy this derailleur operates. Upshifts are ambiguous, imprecise, delayed, mysterious and capricious-the most irritating thing I've ever used. Besides that, Shimano began omitting the barrel cable adjuster with this model; which makes, what would/should otherwise be an easy thing, aligment frustrating. Take my advice, and stay away from this (and all rapid rise models)derailleur. 11 April 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by finally full set I have just recently made the full conversion from sram. I am loving the smooth changing and sweet feel of riding with this now.So buy it and enjoy. 13 November 2011

Answer:
The general rule for choosing dérailleur cage length is the number of chainrings on the crank set.

Single ring - short cage.
Double ring - medium cage
Triple ring - long cage

A medium and long cage will allow up to a 34t cassette as well.

Answer:
It depends on whether you have a single speed a double or triple chain ring up front pal - this determines how much chain you need and how much derailleur cage you need to keep it taut. The more rings the bigger the cage. Hardtail and full suspension is also a factor. If you are unsure ask your LBS they will be able to tell you. If you had a long cage the chances are you will need another one.

How is it different to the XT 772?.

In what way is the M770 different to the M 772. What is meant by rapid rise? Do I need different shifters?

Answer:
The Shadow range of derailleurs are lower in profile to their counterparts; making it less likely that they will be struck off anything on the trail.

Rapid Rise effectively loads the spring inside the derailleur in reverse; meaning that downshifting when the chain/derailleur is under load is performed by releasing tension opposed to creating it; making the shifting smoother. The opposite then takes effect when shifting up.

The M770 Rapid Rise derailleur will function fine with standard Shimano Shifters (recommended SLX or XT).

Answer:
no works on same shifters instead of thumb lever shifting up to a lower gear it drops down to a higher one and the black one moves the gears up - its only reversed on rear mech.
