Rated 5 out of 5 by Smooth shifting as expected Recently upgraded my Deore RD for the XT Deore and combined it with an XT shifter as well. Result is night and day as you can notice the quick response and the smoothness as you shift. CRC made it all happen offering a great price I couldn't resist. 19 March 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by smooth shifting. never had to adjust it again. Works perfectly every time. Doesn't balk or jam, doesn't jump under load or off drops. Great product. 14 March 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Sweet & effortless shifting I've just installed my new RD and the ease and accuracy of gear shifting is awesome. Derailleur looks great, and was really easy to install. What is more, it seems to work great with XT M785 2x10 speed dynasys crankset. I have Alivio 9-speed cassette and HG53 9-speed chain. No problems at all. But as the setup shouldn't be fully compatible, I'll have to wait and see if any problems arise (ie. eats the chainrings). But the mech itself is really good deal for the relatively cheap price! Highly recommended from the forests of Finland! :) 10 March 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Awesome Bought this to replace the Shimano Altus that came on my Specialized Hardrock disc. The original unit lasted 11 months before disintegrating but had not really worked properly after the first week or so. I researched the choice of rear mechs and was looking at probably going for an SLX but as chainreaction's prices are so good I went for the XT. Delivery was very quick and the fitting and adjustment only took a few minutes. Its profile is so small that even running on the rear 11T sprocket the whole unit is tucked under the chainstay out of harm's reach. The cable routing meant I was able to cut 2'' of housing off the original cable meaning there wasn't the huge loop to get snagged on. Shifting is silky smooth both up and down and is instantaneous. The tension in the chain is that good I've removed the chainstay protector off my bike too. I'll be fitting a front XT mech as soon as possible. Being used as part of a 3 x 8 speed setup with LX shifters. 08 March 2014

Answer:
The quickest way to identify required cage length is simply to count the number of chainrings on your crank; a single ring crank requires a Short cage mech, double requires Medium and triple requires Long cage.

Answer:
The cage requirements on a derailleur (for a Mountain Bike) are relative to how much chain movement and tension will be required when shifting through gears.

Short Cage - For use with a Single Ring Crankset.
Medium Cage - For use with a Double Ring Crankset.
Long Cage - For use with a Triple Ring Crankset.

Answer:
Yes; your original Shimano mech can be replaced with a Shadow or Shadow+ without any problem. Shadow technology simply runs a lower profile to reduce the risk of damage by trail debris, and less chain movement to help avoid chain drops etc.

Answer:
As you are only running a single ring up front you will be able to fit a short cage or medium cage.

A short cage would be more appropriate for downhill applications.

Answer:
This Shimano Mech is not compatible with SRAM Shifters due to a variation in pull ratio (this is the case with most SRAM and Shimano derailleur/shifter combinations).

It would be advisable to upgrade the mech to a higher tier SRAM variant if upgrading the drivetrain is the intention and the shifters are functioning correctly.

I had a Rocky Mountain RCle (2007) Hybrid but it broke at the derailleur dropout so I lost the frame and rear derailleur (Alivio 8 speed). The replacement frame is an RC30 (2009) which used the Deore (not sure if SL, SLX, XT, etc). I want to upgrade to a Deore XT since I have to replace the derailleur anyway.

The front ring is 28,38,48 from the RCle. Front derailleur is now a Shimamo FD-443 (I think) as the old derailleur would not fit the larger tube diameter.
The rear cassette is 11 to 30 teeth (8 speed).

I assume I need the long cage (SGS) to allow sufficient range in chain length.

I know that 10 speeds need narrower indexing so not compatible. But some sources say that all 7,8,9 speeds have the same indexing movement (just different number of indents) so a 9 speed should be able to be used with an 8 speed casette. Some 9 speeds say 8/9 speed (ie. the Deore SL) and some don't like the DX. I want to only upgrade the rear derailleur, keeping shifter, cables and chain to minimized cost.

Can you confirm my understanding or clarify? The XT would be ok for use or not?

Answer:
This mech will be fine to run with an 8-speed cassette but will require some minor adjustment when setting it up.

As a triple crankset is being used, the Long Cage variant would be advised.

When using a Triple crankset it is advised to use a Long Cage derailleur (sku64399) to compensate for chain movement.

No, these derailleurs can be used with regular or rapid-fire shifters as you prefer; as long as it is a Shimano MTB shifter it should be fine.
