Rated 5 out of 5 by 16 October 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by
Rated 5 out of 5 by Amazing this shifts perfectly worth paying the extra and look very nice. lightweight 15 October 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by A great quality, crisp and smooth shifting derailleur for a very decent price I bought this derailleur for my 8x3 Shimano drive-train bike system. I was trying to replace the Deore M-591 rear derailleur that I had since it was worn too much. Heard that Shimano 8 and 9 speed drive-train components were supposed to be interchangeable so I decided to go with this Deore XT. This derailleur worked perfectly for my 8x3 drive-train system. All that was needed was an inline adjuster to be fitted since this derailleur doesn't have a barrel adjuster and a couple of adjustments from the shifter to the derailleur itself. (Inline adjusters are only needed if the shifter doesn't have a barrel adjuster, since this derailleur also doesn't have a barrel adjuster). Just to let all 8 speed customers know, you will need an 8 speed chain to go along with this derailleur on your 8-speed system. It really is highly recommended for this derailleur to be paired with a rapid-fire shifter, and is necessary that it gets paired up ONLY with Shimano drivetrain components. (***BE ADVISED***: Components of other brands like SRAM or Campagnolo or anything else not Shimano are NOT compatible to work along with a Shimano component system. So make sure you have a Shimano drive-train system before you buy this). Other than these simple precautions to take into account, this little guy isn't actually as little as it is, quality and strength wise. It may be something small and cheap, but it is grand in terms of how it shifts and how smooth it runs and how great of a deal it is. This derailleur (in the US) can cost more than $130 if bought from any bike shop or sports store. That's the derailleur alone. They would tend to charge you around $10 extra, plus an additional $15-$20 just to put install it for you. Altogether of which would cost you a total of at least, not usually, AT LEAST $155. Buying it from this website can take this "at least" total down to $84. That is if you choose standard shipping and find someone whose willing to install it for you for 15 bucks. If this person charges less (usually a hard and very lucky chance to find), then it will be less than 84 bucks altogether. If you are a good enough bike mechanical expert yourself and have all the necessary tools, you can get away with just 69 bucks (59 bucks for this product and 10 bucks for standard shipping for orders under $100). Something that could have cost you at least 155 bucks from the average US bike shop can be done for you for just 84 bucks if you buy this product from this website. A great product/component for a very cheap deal that can't be found anywhere else. Highly recommended for those who enjoy a long-lasting crisp-shifting smooth-running durably-built drive-train system to be paired with on a bike ride in the rough mountains. If you need a component that meets or exceeds your standards without wasting so much money, STOP WASTING TIME BROWSING FOR IT ON OTHER WEBSITES AND JUST BUY IT NOW FROM HERE!! You won't be disappointed!!! 14 October 2014

Answer:
Yes, the Shimano 9sp MTB components should all be cross-compatible so your LX shifters should work fine with XT derailleurs.

Answer:
You bet your life it most definitely will work with Shimano Deore LX SL-M580 shifters. This product is recommended to be paired up with rapid-fire shifters, but would work fine with other shimano types. The shifter set you mentioned is one of the almost top line rapid-fire shifter sets of Shimano MTB components. It should ESPECIALLY work for a shifter like that. As far as a front derailleur, the shifter-derailler system for the rear mech is not actually directly connected to the shifter-derailleur system of the front mech. They're actually 2 different systems only connected via the back-forth cycle travel of the chain, so you have nothing to worry about for the front derailleur, as long as the front derailleur is for a triple crankset (3 speeds for the left-hand side shifter). The front derailleur and the shifter set you mentioned are a great combination, and so is the combination with this item. So go for it!

Yes; this setup gives you a gear capacity of 44 teeth (42-22 + 36-12), so you will need the Long Cage version of rear derailleur.

Answer:
as far as a 22/32/42 triple crankset, it will work, but a 12-36T cassette will not work. The available cassette sprocket combinations for the Deore XT M772 9-speed rear derailleur is 11-32T, 11-34T, and 12-34T. A derailleur to work with a 12-36T cassette would be the Deore RD-M592. That would be Deore, not Deore XT, but it's not much of a significant quality difference and should work pretty well too.

Answer:
The quickest way to identify required cage length is simply to count the number of chainrings on your crank; a single ring crank requires a Short cage mech, double requires Medium and triple requires Long cage.

Answer:
Yes, it definitely would, but those dual control shifters are also to be paired along with hydraulic disc brake calipers. The derailleur is no problem. Just make sure you have the Deore XT M765 hydraulic disc brake calipers on your bike since I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be able to be paired with regular cable-pull disc-brake calipers.

Answer:
The cage requirements on a derailleur (for a Mountain Bike) are relative to how much chain movement and tension will be required when shifting through gears.

Short Cage - For use with a Single Ring Crankset.
Medium Cage - For use with a Double Ring Crankset.
Long Cage - For use with a Triple Ring Crankset.

Answer:
Yes; your original Shimano mech can be replaced with a Shadow or Shadow+ without any problem. Shadow technology simply runs a lower profile to reduce the risk of damage by trail debris, and less chain movement to help avoid chain drops etc.
