Shimano XT M786 Shadow 10 Speed Rear Mech

  • Shimano's new Direct Mount Rear Derailleur system gives more space around the rear frame dropout resulting in easier rear wheel removal but also allows frame designers to shorten chain stays, increase axel sizes and move suspension pivots.
  • Direct Mount gives a simpler, cleaner look.
  • Deore XT Shadow Dyna-Sys 10-speed rear derailleur delivers reliable and precise shifting with a stiff and lightweight open design.
  • Shadow features a super low profile design that reduces the risk of damage from trail side hazards.
  • Shadow Plus uses a chain stabilising switch that when on will reduce chain bounce in rough terrain maintaining more stable drive and shifting. This can be switched off to remove the wheel.
  • Direct cable routing prevents snagging from any trail side hazards.
  • All-alloy construction leads to lower weight without compromising strength and durability.
  • Four fluorine-coated link pin bushings make this one of the slickest shifting derailleurs on the trails.
  • High rigidity wide outer link braces the pulley body to increase pivot joint rigidity resulting in a crisp shift.
  • Strong return spring for a positive shifting feel.
  • Durable sealed bearing pulleys.

Rated 4.6 out of 5 by 21 reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5 by Needs no introduction The clutch system is like a gift from heaven. Better chain management, less chain slapping. Especially helpful if you're running a narrow wide single chainring with no chain device. XT Rear Ds are always known for their crisp and accurate shifting. Also it's very robust holding up to crashes and knocks. Clutch mechanism also easy to service and adjust with simple tools. 12 April 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great piece of kit!! Worth it I upgraded from a normal XT rear mech and it was the right choice! This is absolutely great and can withstand almost anything, luckily I haven't bashed it yet and I hope I don't. I run a race face narrow wide chain ring with this and it is the most silent set up ever, no chainslap and smooth shifting! Really worth the price 05 April 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Medium cage - perfect for 2 x 10 set up Dead easy to install. Powerful - precise shifting. Better than 9 speed Saint previosly used (and that was good). Matched to XT shifter, using fully enclosed cable from shifter to mech, which is the perfect solution. Very neat, well out of the way of trail debris. Good price as well. Use with KMC "x10" chain 03 April 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Otimo custo beneficio Mais barato que o xtr so que mais robusto, sai do slx para o xt plus, trocas mais precisas e rapidas agora sem a corrente pulando no quadro. Acabamento top e da aquele up no visual da bike. Recomendo muito o xt shadow plus 01 April 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Very Happy I am very happy with this rear mech. I bought this as part of an 2x10 upgrade which included cranks, bottom bracket, cassette, chain, front mech and shifters. I decided to go XT across the board. Previously I had a mixture of stuff, but I did have a 9 speed long cage XT shadow which on descents used to drop the chain and ghost shift from time to time. Not this though! I’ve only been out a couple of times but so far, where the old set up used to drop the chain this one stays put. I’ve been told that leaving the clutch on makes it more difficult to change gears, but I have not noticed it being any more difficult than it was before. In fact gear changes are smoother. This rear mech looks good (especially in black) changes gears quickly and smoothly, is quiet on descents and doesn’t drop the chain. Like I said, I am very happy with this mech. 13 March 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by No more chain slap I discarded my chain stay protector today thanks to the Shadow+ Great unit, very accurate and quick during gear changes. Best of all, now more noise from the chain slapping against the chain stay 12 March 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Cambio Shimano XT Plus GS 786 Todo correcto, buen material envió económico en 7 días laborables , Chain como siempre todo perfecto . Este modelo de cambio es imprescindible para una transmisión 1x10 con el tensor de cadena , ademas de la calidad de Shimano XT . Lo dicho totalmente recomendable y la tienda un 10 . 11 March 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Flawless performance After running a standard XT RD for some time and have the sound of the chain hiting the frame along with the chipped paint to look at each time I cleaned it, fitting one of these to a new bike/frame was a no brainer. It does everything it says, with no chain slap= no chipped paint. Also running a 1x10 setup and its fantastic 16 February 2014

Answer:
Hi Ofir, it basically refers to how long the 'arm' is that holds the jockey wheels and it is dictated by the number [and size] of the front rings you're running. The length of the arm controls how far the rear mech moves when swapping cogs, for example, a DH bike with a single chainring with medium number of teeth can use a mech with short cage, whereas a triple chainring setup is likely require a long cage, etc.

Answer:
The length of cage required is dictated by the number of chainrings you are running up front; a single or double crankset can use a Medium cage derailleur at the back, while a Triple chainset will be better matched with a Long Cage derailleur.

Answer:
Yes you can use It. It's basically the same but with addition of the clutch system. Turn it ON to minimize chain slap, turn it OFF to work as per normal rear mech.

Answer:
If your gear shifter is Dynasys compatible then it will work - if it's compatible then you will see the Dynasys logo printed on the housing (White square with a black D in the middle of it).

Some SLX stuff is Dynasys compatible and some is not

Answer:
No. Operation of the derailleur will be blurry because the 9-speed shifter transfers the movement to a distance for 9-speed derailleur.

Yes; with the exception of the M800 Saint rear derailleur, all Shimano MTB derailleurs mount via a standard 10mm connecting bolt attached to your gear hanger.

8 speed setup?

I realise there is no indexing in the mech itself, so the shifter controls the movement of the mech. I would like to fit these to some 8 speed shimano muck around bikes I have. They will both be 11-30 cluster, 22/32 chainrings. One will have a sram cluster which will apparently work with the existing setup.

Answer:
As this mech is designed to run on a 10-speed drivetrain; the cage itself is spaced for a narrow 10-speed drivetrain; in relation to running this with an 8-speed system and shifting over the cassette would not be mechanically possible.

Are these two different mechs?

The picture of the black mech has a clutch switch, but the silver option appears to be a standard mech without the clutch. Is this just a wrong picture or is the silver only available without the clutch?

Max teeth for SGS 41T or 43T?

I have checked many many stores online and all the RD-M786 SGS listings give 43T for the specs. Does this model legitimately have a shorter cage or is the 41T a typo?

Cheers

Answer:
Possibly! However you know in your heart the only solution is to match product i.e 10 speed with 10 speed, not 10 speed with 9 speed parts. The problem will be the chain. A 10 speed chain on a 9 speed cassette or visa-versa may work but not properly.

Answer:
Non-direct frame meaning you are using a replaceable hanger. In that case, you still can use it on your bike but you need a hanger to fit this derailleur. It's exactly as you see in the picture, no hanger.
