Shimano XT M786 Shadow 10 Speed Rear Mech

  • Shimano's new Direct Mount Rear Derailleur system gives more space around the rear frame dropout resulting in easier rear wheel removal but also allows frame designers to shorten chain stays, increase axel sizes and move suspension pivots.
  • Direct Mount gives a simpler, cleaner look.
  • Deore XT Shadow Dyna-Sys 10-speed rear derailleur delivers reliable and precise shifting with a stiff and lightweight open design.
  • Shadow features a super low profile design that reduces the risk of damage from trail side hazards.
  • Shadow Plus uses a chain stabilising switch that when on will reduce chain bounce in rough terrain maintaining more stable drive and shifting. This can be switched off to remove the wheel.
  • Direct cable routing prevents snagging from any trail side hazards.
  • All-alloy construction leads to lower weight without compromising strength and durability.
  • Four fluorine-coated link pin bushings make this one of the slickest shifting derailleurs on the trails.
  • High rigidity wide outer link braces the pulley body to increase pivot joint rigidity resulting in a crisp shift.
  • Strong return spring for a positive shifting feel.
  • Durable sealed bearing pulleys.

Rated 4.5 out of 5 by 38 reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5 by Precise and quiet This is the first rear mech that I've had that uses Shadow+. I've immediately noticed how much quieter the chain is on rough sections. Works exactly as it should; couldn't be happier. 06 August 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by great Good shifter, accurate changes. Not at all heavy, would buy this again if I had to make the choice. Very good on my trial run in Bedgebury 05 August 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Shimano all the way. Great derailer - chainslap minimised, good shifting performance. 04 August 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Easy to install and set, precise shifting Been using my new 1x10 XT Shadow+ system for couple of months now. Really enjoying riding even the trickiest rocky terrain as this piece of art provides me confidence of precise shifting compared to my old Shimano XT derailleur. It was easy to install and getting adjusted, although the instructions provided were pretty blurry. It is great that this derailleur allows me to use 36-11 cassette with 34t chainring to give good gear ratios from enduro riding to 60+ km XC runs. 14 July 2014
Rated 2 out of 5 by broke on first trail ride Shifts great - yes. No dropped chain - yes. Broken beyond repair on first fairly light trail ride - yes. Don't even know how, I think a pin snapped or something but could barely get back to trail head. Non repairable requiring replacement. Not impressed. 13 July 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Лучшее соотношение цена/качество Самый лучший переключатель за данную цену. Использую переключатели исключительно данной линейки. Кол-во поломок ничтожно. 11 July 2014
Rated 2 out of 5 by A cosa serve? 04 June 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by perfetto Il migliore deragliatore che abbia mai provato.... la catena non cade più!!! 04 June 2014

Answer:
The length of cage required is dictated by the number of chainrings you are running up front; a single or double crankset can use a Medium cage derailleur at the back, while a Triple chainset will be better matched with a Long Cage derailleur.

Answer:
Hi Ofir, it basically refers to how long the 'arm' is that holds the jockey wheels and it is dictated by the number [and size] of the front rings you're running. The length of the arm controls how far the rear mech moves when swapping cogs, for example, a DH bike with a single chainring with medium number of teeth can use a mech with short cage, whereas a triple chainring setup is likely require a long cage, etc.

Answer:
Good question and no doubt topical. The answer is yes you can, but you may struggle running say a 38 tooth front chain ring and 40 tooth cassette . But if you use a 2 X front mech you will easily be able to run 24 /40. In my opinion if you want / need a 40 tooth cassette you are better of running a 2 X 10 (24/38 - 11/36). This with the rear mech is FANTASTIC in all locations. Shimano "know" & are not fashion led!

Answer:
The 40t sprocket is compatible with most medium or long cage 10 speed mountain rear derailleurs.
Typically you’ll need a long cage rear derailleur to use this setup on a 2x10 setup, while Medium should be enough for most 1x10 setups. You’ll want to double check your rear derailleur capacity; for a SRAM RD you can get away with a 14T difference in front rings (like a 28/42) and for Shimano you can manage a 12T jump (like a 28/40).

Medium Cage on a 2 x 10 Set up?

Hi I am looking to buy one of these in a medium cage for a 2 x 10 set up (26/38-11/36), I was just wondering if the medium cage would work in all gear combinations or if I should buy a long cage? I currently run a long cage XT Shadow derailer.
Thanks, Brett.

Answer:
The medium cage XT rear mech works perfectly on a 26/38 front 11/36 rear. When installing remember to cut the chain so that when in 38 front & 36 rear the rear mech should point down vertically (i.e towards 6 o'clock).
In reality you can use all 20 gears, in practise it is very rare you use more than 5 (1 - 5) of the rear cassette when using the smallest chain ring, BECAUSE the larger chain ring gives such amazing performance. The small chain ring is really only needed for climbing a techy uphill sections any more than the first 5 and your in the wrong gear.
On this basis the medium cage is the best mech (XT with clutch) set up as described above...

Answer:
Shimano list the RD-M786 SGS as having a maximum capacity of 43t, and the GS version as 35t.

Running a 26/38 and 11/36 gives you a capacity of 37 ((38-26)+(36-11)), so while you would be recommended the Long cage version, the Medium will likely be ok as well.

If your gear shifter is Dynasys compatible then it will work - if it's compatible then you will see the Dynasys logo printed on the housing (White square with a black D in the middle of it).

Some SLX stuff is Dynasys compatible and some is not

8 speed setup?

I realise there is no indexing in the mech itself, so the shifter controls the movement of the mech. I would like to fit these to some 8 speed shimano muck around bikes I have. They will both be 11-30 cluster, 22/32 chainrings. One will have a sram cluster which will apparently work with the existing setup.

Answer:
As this mech is designed to run on a 10-speed drivetrain; the cage itself is spaced for a narrow 10-speed drivetrain; in relation to running this with an 8-speed system and shifting over the cassette would not be mechanically possible.

Answer:
Possibly! However you know in your heart the only solution is to match product i.e 10 speed with 10 speed, not 10 speed with 9 speed parts. The problem will be the chain. A 10 speed chain on a 9 speed cassette or visa-versa may work but not properly.
