Shimano XT Disc Rotor Ice Tec RT86

SM-RT86 Ice-Tec rotors give excellent performance made from a stainless steel / alloy 3-layer sandwich construction that manages heat while riding.

Features:

  • The clad steel / alloy / steel rotor construction allows heat generated from braking to radiate quickly through the aluminium core achieving surface temperature drops of around 50°C. When used with Ice-Tec pads surface temperatures can drop from around 400 to 300°C, this provides great improvements in performance all round
  • Ice-Tec rotors achieve long pad life, less noise and less fade due to improved heat dispersion
  • 6-bolt mounting system
  • Rotor contact surface has been developed for excellent pad clearing and cooling which increases pad performance and life
  • Large forged alloy spider supports rotor surface, increasing rigidity and reducing weight

Specifications:

  • Disc Rotor Mount: 6 Bolt - PCD 44mm
  • Construction: Aluminum core

Rated 4.9 out of 5 by 51 reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent braking performance A lot more braking power compared to KCNC Razor rotors. 06 October 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent stopping power They work great, better than my previous ones. Little to no noise and never had any troubke with overheating. 05 October 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Perfcto Produco perfecto. Los puse en unos Formula RX, y se acabaron los ruidos, ademas la potencia de frenado aumento. 02 October 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Frenada progesiva y potente Perfecto complemento para el conjuto de frexo XT Ice-tech. Frenada progesiva y potente. Muy fácil de instalar 30 September 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Noticable performance difference over other rotors Sometimes it's the small and relatively cheap upgrades which give the greatest performance boost. Icetech rotors are truly innovative and work, and the difference beyond other rotors (including other non-icetech shimano rotors) is night and day. As a side note, paired with XT brake levers and calipers with icetech (finned) pads, you will struggle to find a quality brake for similar, or even in a lot of cases more money. 18 September 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Looks good, but a bit pricey compared to other brands Paired the rotors up with saint brakes and have never had a problem with the rotors, can't say that about the brakes! 15 September 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Top quality. Quite light. Paired this rotor with formula c1 brake and the braking now is quieter. Also it looks good with new wheel on Hope hub. 05 September 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Simply amazing Used in conjunction with the ice tec pads, these discs are a no fade option. You get to go down a disc size and reduce a wee bit of weight too, because you get the same braking power returns as a bigger disc would offer because the heat absorption through the alloy sandwich disc and the heat sink pads take out more than a bigger disc can. 13 August 2014

Will this work with sintered pads?

I have Shimano M446 brakes, but using aftermarket sintered pads. Will this rotor fit the calipers? I measured the calipers and mounts and found out that any floating rotor rivets will rub somewhere. Since these are not floating but still have rivets will it rub anywhere? And are these suiteabale for use with sintered pads?

Answer:
These rotors are suitable for use with a sintered pad.

With regard to fitment, they will fit any Shimano brake caliper so you should not have any trouble with fouling.

Some riders will find that the fouling from floating rotors occurs on their brake mount due to frame design or the spacing required to centre the caliper.

Answer:
Using Shimano calipers with RT86 rotors will be fine. Although designed to work with Ice-Tech pads for maximum effectiveness, other sintered pads should function ok.

If these are the finned brake pads that come with the M785 Brake levers then yes you can. It's pointless spending extra on the rotors and not having the appropriate brake pads ;-). Some kits are sold with/without finned pads.

Answer:
This rotor is designed to work with Shimano’s Ice-Tec Disc Brakes to provide optimized braking performance with Shimanos Disc brake calipers and Ice-Tec brake pads. We would recommend that the customer with Formula Disc Brakes purchase and use appropriate models of Rotors that Formula have developed their disc brakes with. I.e you should be purchasing Formula Disc Brake rotors for their brake.

Yes they do, and mine came with a little lock right on them also. Bear in mind that shimano recently altered the bolting method slightly, and the old instructions still come with the new bolts. You will think that you are missing some mounting plates if this is the case, the shimano website has up to date fitting instructions.

Answer:
I'd recommend 180mm up front, I'm not particularly heavy for my height/build and my bikes aren't on the heavyweight side of the scale either. It gives you options without using/locking up the back all the time. I'd always made do with 160mm on a xc front brake (shimano) but it would heat up a bit on long descents etc. Make sure you have the finned (ice-tech) brake pads too or you're wasting money on these rotors.

Answer:
Logan, sounds like a 160mm rotor would do the job on your bike, but Monni's advice is sound as a 180 up front would give you more braking options and would add nothing noticeable in additional weight over the 160s. So, on balance, go for the 180s.

Answer:
That depends if you want to be 100% happy it's fitted correctly.

The instructions say to tighten the screws to a specific torque, and as such would require a torque wrench. However they can be tightened using a standard Allen key set. Indeed my local bike store mechanic fitted them by hand, tightening from one screw to the next, and then round again. They have done well over 2000 miles since and are performing perfectly.

That said, a torque wrench is a fairly essential mountain bike tool, especially if you have a full sus, as the pivoting bolts should be checked for tightness every few rides or so.

Answer:
This would be a Common Problem with Brakes but unfortunately no, you would be recommended sticking with Avid Rotors as the braking surface on the Rotors varies from Brand to Brand so, the RT86 Rotors would only be recommended for Shimano Disc Brakes.

I have listed some Rotors below that you could have a look at.
