For the ultimate in shifting performance and durability. Shadow technology features a super low profile design that reduces the risk of damage from trail side hazards, and a chain stabilising switch that when on will reduce chain bounce in rough terrain maintaining more stable drive and shifting. This can be switched off to remove the wheel.

I have 3 xc bikes
- Gaint anthem xo 29er 2012 (changed out the full xt to Xo)
- Specialized epic expert 29er 2011 (upgrade to full xx)
- Specialized epic comp carbon 29er 2012 (upgraded to XTR)
I have tried shiamno several times now however the 1:2 ratio gives a lagging feeling when shifting. I do like the feel however when the shadow plus is engaged its hards to shift. That is why i prefer sram as it has a 1:1 true ratio meaning that it is fast and more crisp changing. This is noticeable when changing on rough sections.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Anonymous Amazing!
Upgraded to the 2012 XT group set on my Specialized Stumpy pro and it's been amazing, I was curious about the XTR shadow plus and after some research decided to get it from CRC. 100-150km of cross country trails later... this produnt is amazing! I dont hear the chain slapping anymore rather I can hear the tires on the trail like it should be. Shifting up is just abit firmer but it's fine and works really well. I opened up the housing and tightened the cluch mech till the shift felt too heavy and then back off abit for a perfect personal feel on the shift. As always an excellent product by Shimano and great service from CRC.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Anonymous This is one of the best upgrades I've made in a long time! Its a real game changer in terms of rear mechs, the shifting is as you would expect from XTR but the real amazement is how well it holds the chain in place and how quiet it is. With my old XTR mech I was dropping chains regularly on rocky/root descents where as with this it has not come off once.I was thinking of getting a chain device but now i don't need to. The only downside is the shifting is stiffer but its a worthy sacrifice.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Anonymous best thing for an Orange 5
fitted one to my 2011 Orange 5,easily one of the best upgrades you can buy. The chain slap was horrible with the standard shadow mech, now the noise has virtually gone. Does make the shifting slightly harder, but its a worth while trade off.

The M986 is compatible with the new Direct Mount rear derailleur standard, while the M985 runs the standard 'normal' hanger mounting style. The 2012 Slash 9 ran a standard derailleur, so the M985 should be fine.
