Shimano XTR M986 Shadow 10 Speed Rear Mech

  • XTR Shadow plus Dyna-Sys 10-speed rear derailleur for the ultimate in shifting performance and durability.
  • Shimano's new Direct Mount Rear Derailleur system gives more space around the rear frame dropout resulting in easier rear wheel removal but also allows frame designers to shorten chain stays, increase axel sizes and move suspension pivots.
  • Direct Mount gives a simpler, cleaner look.
  • Shadow plus features a super low profile design.
  • Shadow Plus uses a chain stabilising switch that when on will reduce chain bounce in rough terrain maintaining more stable drive and shifting.
  • Single tension spring prevents contact with the chainstay resulting in a silent ride.
  • Direct cable routing prevents snagging from any trail side hazards.
  • Full carbon fibre outer pulley cage saves weight while alloy inner cage increases rigidity.
  • Cold forged wide alloy links and pivot body.
  • Four fluorine-coated link pin bushings.
  • Strong return spring for a positive shifting feel.
  • Improved cable pull ratio provides a more accurate shift action.
  • Dyna-Sys 10-speed compatible only.
  • Durable sealed bearing pulleys for low friction.
  • Top normal spring uses the spring to select higher gears.
  • 35T capacity GS cage.

Rated 4.4 out of 5 by 8 reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5 by The Best. Given you can buy the SLX mech for almost a quarter the price it's still good value for money. The clutch shadow plus system in this is completely different to the rest of the shimano range, including XT and Saint. Not only will it last longer but it won't fail on you when you need it most and it allows you to maintain it, they even give you a tool inside the mech to tweak it up mid ride. Being XTR, everything is machined properly and there's no plastic where you need more robust materials, plus if you do clobber it, all the parts are available individually to replace anything. Buy cheap, buy twice. Just get this. 19 May 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Silky smooth From the XTR family, his rear mech really live up to its name as the top of the line rear mech for MTB. The shifting is silky smooth which you will not be able to inf in other RDs. 07 May 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Ottimo e leggero Ottimo prodotto, leggero e compatto. Utilizzato per upgrade totale a xtr della mia 29" 03 April 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Super Excellent matériel. Changement de vitesse rapide et souple. Tout ce qu'il y a de plus efficace. 18 March 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Robust, reliable shifting and no chain slap!! I've been running an XTR rear derailleur Shadow+ (medium cage) on my 160mm all-mountain/gravity enduro bike for over 10 months and after riding sometimes harsh and unforgiving terrain in Victoria, Australia (e.g. Kinglake, You Yangs, Bright, Barjarg, Mt Buller, list goes on…) and throughout Scotland (e.g. Nevis Range WC DH Track and Red Route, Kirroughtree, Kyle of Sutherland, Wolftrax), I haven't dropped a chain once and rarely skip a gear. When there is a bit of gear skipping, a simple tune of the derailleur sorts it out with minimal fuss. It is easy to set up and maintain. Its such a good derailleur that I bought another one to replace my XT (non-clutch) for my 140mm travel all-mountain hard tail. I have read some reviews that when the derailleur is locked during use (e.g. clutch on) that the jockey wheels wear out quicker, but I haven't noticed any significant wear yet. Yes it is expensive - but totally worth it! 06 January 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Great mech, but maybe not worth it? The XT shadow+ rear mech will likely shift just as well for a very slight weight gain. I threw this on my AM bike for a little bit of bling, and the plus version of the XT was out of stock. The clutch seems to do the trick of keeping chain slap in check. I wrapped the chainstay and the chain only hits the wrap on very hard landings. I think I still prefer the 1:1 feel of SRAM products but there is no denying that this shifts very well (as it should for this price). 19 November 2013
Rated 2 out of 5 by Not built for mtb Bought this at the start of the year then saw numerous complaints regarding the carbonarm bending/breaking.Managed to get 6 months use from it then brushed a rock and it bent under not much pressure. If you toodle around and do a bit of XC it might be fine. besides that it's a lottery regarding whne its going to go and how far you will have to walk back to you starting point. Shimano bringing out a new version with a titanium back so they know it themselves. 02 November 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by All things considered...not bad. As you'd expect with shimano and xtr this mech does the job, super fast, silky smooth shifting. Easy to setup and will do miles on miles without having to touch it. The only downside is it is quite fragile. If it looks at a rock it will smash. In summary does the job it is designed for VERY well indeed, but could be stronger. 29 April 2013

Answer:
Yes and no. It's not supposed to be but there is a mod you can do with a small plate to change the pull on a shimano shifter.

I've also read that it's possible to do something with the SRAM 9 speed shifter too.

Type it into google and there's a link to a pinkbike site where they've done this.

Answer:
I use 24/32 rings with 11-36 cassette with the GS mech and it looks just about right maybe a bit tight..

Given you have a bigger ring, I would select the SGS long cage mech.

Currently I have the Shimano XT M780 and want to upgrade. I've looked at several and feel that this is the best I can get for the price. I just need to check that it will fit to my Trek Remedy 8 2012 model.
