Riding comfortably at speed requires an unconscious, intuitive confidence in your machine. It requires knowing that whatever conditions you come across your brakes will be ready and able to deliver reliable control in any situation.

Say hello to XTR Trail brakes, and say goodbye to compromise. The integration of Servo-Wave brake-boosting technology into an XTR-level brake generates gobs of lightweight stopping power (125 percent of the previous XTR benchmark, to be exact) that can be precisely rolled on and off with single-finger effort—leaving a better grip on the bar for charging through the gnar.

As the most powerful and most controllable XTR-level brake of all time, XTR Trail absolutely assassinates wide-open descents with uncanny consistency, delivering more confidence than ever before.

The new XTR Trail lever delivers big power. As the first XTR lever equipped with Servo-Wave, riders can precisely control 25 percent more power with highly-adjustable and responsive one-finger braking.

Specification:
• Hydraulic Fluid: Shimano Mineral Oil

Rated 4.7 out of 5 by 7 reviewers.
Rated 4 out of 5 by Great Response These levers respond with little finger pull force on the trigger if you need to brake hard and fast, which is really great compared to the xt levers I had before. The downside is that the spring mechanism seems to rattle while riding. I'm still happy with the performance of them. Will recommend them to anyone interested. 16 March 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Worldclass Brakes Everyone i rode with said brakes improve riding by 60%.So when i was at the cycle show i went round testing brakes and when i came away from the cycle show i spent some more time reading reviews and surfing the web for the best price. Then i came across these babies so i ordered and waited 2 days before they arrived.Once they had arrived i put them on immedialty and got riding all i can say is "Holy Cow" my riding has improved alot ,braking later before corners also not braking at all for some corners i used to have to brake for. They are very reliable also they give you confidence as the stopping power is so huge. Finaly they look realy nice if you have any onther xtr parts on your bike. So if your looking for brakes these are the ones so snap them up know before they all go. 27 October 2013

Rated 5 out of 5 by Very nice indeed I'll start with the negatives, which are hardly worth mentioning, but anyway...the free stroke adjuster is a cheapo looking philips screw. It just doesn't match the classy look of all other parts. Apparently it's near useless so I won't be adjusting it. The main lever is quite short. I'm running these with X0 gripshift and can only do 1 finger braking. However, I can lock up either wheel using just my index finger so this probably won't be an issue. I'm running these with my old M965 calipers and they're working brilliantly. If you're buying these levers separately, please note they don't come with the rubber nut cover. You can only use the M985/M988 cover as it slides right over the nut onto the piston body. The M985/M988 nut is much shorter to allow this. Basically, you need to buy the correct nut, olive, insert and rubber cover if you want to use you existing hose. They're very hard to find as separates, so your best bet is to buy the complete BH90 kit - but these will set you back £25 each, so bear this in mind if you're thinking of upgrading just your levers. In terms of positives, there are too many to list - I love the new bleed port on the lever body, you just stick a syringe in and suck while squirting into the caliper, much easier than fiddling around with an open reservoir. Oh, and they're amazingly light and looks sweet. 29 November 2011
Rated 5 out of 5 by Xtr Lever on Saint Caliper I installed a set of M988 Levers on my Shimano Saint calipers. They feel awesome and brake really well. The XTR levers feels perfect compared to my old Saint levers. I dont have much time on them yet. Time will tell but they sure beat the feel of the original saint levers by a lot. The Xtr levers bolts right onto the current saint hoses. I still had to try the XTR BR90 hoses that i ordered afterward. 07 September 2011
Rated 5 out of 5 by Finally a great, light Shimano brake. I'm running the 988 levers with the 966 calipers so there's a bit less power than the new 985 series calipers and their dedicated hose. Still so much power I've swapped back to a 140mm rear rotor - real one finger braking even with those dinky levers. All this with a superb level of modulation - heaps better than the XTR 975. They look to be beautifully made, and nice to have a hinged clamp finally. Good pad clearance too. A couple of small vices in relation to the virtues - the free-stroke adjustment doesn't seem to do that much, and bleeding is still a bit of a mission. 26 April 2011
Rated 5 out of 5 by I'm using a pair of these with the previous generation XTR calipers with no problems at all. They replaced a set of XTR combined levers and shifters. Straight swap, quick bleed (I used a hayes/formula brake bleed kit) and I was away. Really good brake feel, modulation and much more powerful than the old XTR. True single finger braking with bags of confidence. 19 April 2011

Are these levers I-spec compatible?

Can I mount the I spec shifters directly to the lever or do I need to purchase the I spec adapter separately?

i-Spec A or B version?

Are these the original/older M988 levers with the clamp that is only compatible with i-Spec A shifters? Or the newer B model with the clamp that is compatible with both old i-Spec A and newer i-Spec B shifters?
