Shimano XTR Trail Disc Brakes M988

Riding comfortably at speed requires an unconscious, intuitive confidence in your machine. It requires knowing that whatever conditions you come across your brakes will be ready and able to deliver reliable control in any situation.

Say hello to XTR Trail brakes, and say goodbye to compromise. The integration of Servo-Wave brake-boosting technology into an XTR-level brake generates gobs of lightweight stopping power (125 percent of the previous XTR benchmark, to be exact) that can be precisely rolled on and off with single-finger effort—leaving a better grip on the bar for charging through the gnar.

With industry-first full ceramic caliper pistons, radiator-fin-backed brake pads to shed performance-sapping heat, these all-new brakes maintain cool, quiet performance under fire.

As the most powerful and most controllable XTR-level brake of all time, XTR Trail absolutely assassinates wide-open descents with uncanny consistency, delivering more confidence than ever before.

The new XTR Trail lever delivers big power. As the first XTR lever equipped with Servo-Wave, riders can precisely control 25 percent more power with highly-adjustable and responsive one-finger braking. When coupled with the XTR Trail lever, the new forged one-piece caliper delivers a balance of light weight and power that resists performance-sapping heat better than ever before thanks to an industry-first full-ceramic piston and optional Ice Technology radiator brake pads

Rated 4.3 out of 5 by 16 reviewers.
Rated 1 out of 5 by Disappointed and giving up. Have run Hope brakes of various types for 10 years with no issues. My new bike (Santa Cruz Bronson) came with the XTR Trail as standard. Took some getting used to the on/off nature of this brake versus the progressive and easily adjustable Hope Evo Tech M4. Stopping power is there in the XTR but terrible rider feedback and response. Finally got used to the feel but then after 500 kms of total riding the front brake lever is sticking on initial pull. Scary thing to happen as you then pull harder and the front wheel locks up completely. Going to switch back to Hope and sell off the XTR brakes. Talked to some mates who have the same XTR brakes and they have similar feedback and are looking to switch too. 17 October 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by Light, effective stopping power; but brake lever gets corrosion stains easily Solid piece of kit as expected form XTR level stuff. No idea why there are corrosion stains on the chrome levers. No problems with braking power in trails and XC. No issues with brake fade. Reliable power in the wet/dry. Expensive. 01 August 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by great but... Great brake! Modulation and a lot of stopping power but I have the same problem like Elks from australia.Strange, they lost all the power if you don't use the brake often(lot of bikes) but after several hard braking the problem disappear, maybe rust on the pads because they haul before the full power come. And although I bleed the brake very carefully sometime I have modulation at the lever(maybe the shimano oil with cold of winter) 19 February 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by these are the ducks Awesome brakes just fitted these to my new steed..having tried various others over the years the Shimano m988's are fantastic with plenty of modualtion and incredible stopping power...mini version of brembo monoblocs. kit is well kitted out with plenty of hose and spare olives if you need to trim the hose down. on that note make sure get the bleed kit and spare mineral fluid. 19 November 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Fantastic Unbelievably good brakes, so much power with just one finger, instant bite, no fade, can't possibly see how these could be improved You will need to learn how to brake again once you have got these brakes 19 February 2012
Rated 4 out of 5 by as per every other review Great brakes - as per every other review however the pads seem to go a little strange if you don't use your brakes regularly ie - month with no riding. Both my brakes and a friend who has these also found that the pads lost all stopping power after a month without use! seems like they develop a glaze or something while not being used? Don't quite understand the mechanics of it but it's an inconvenience to go out riding after a month and find that you're brakes don't work. Interested to know if other folk have had the same problem. 09 February 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by xtr m988 just fitted these on my v10 carbon and they are a excellent set of brakes. i used them in whislter for 4 weeks straight and everyday there were relailbe and the stopping power were immense. excellent in all conditions and so sharp its unreal. deffetnley worth the money due to all the power they have would deffinetley reccomend these brakes 07 February 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent brake I could never get my Elixirs working satisfactorily so bought a set of these brakes. The lever design, dead band, power and modulation are all perfect. The XTRs made me realise how badly my Elixirs were fading, even with an 8 inch front rotor. These have never had any fade problems with an Ice Tec front rotor and an Avid CS G3 on the rear. They also got rid of the resonance problem I was having with my rear Elixir. Best brake I've ever used. One thing to note is the hoses fit my medium Reign X perfectly without needing trimmed but some large bikes might need a slightly longer hose. 21 January 2012

Shimano XTR trail m988 disc brakes

When I look at the Shimano XTR trail m988 disc break set I have in my basket. I see the break leaver, callipers and cables. Just wondering does it also come with discs and mountings, or do I need to buy those seperate? Thanks

Line length for XC ?

I run a 100mm travel fork. Is it possible to get the 988 front brake with a line length of 830 to 850mm. If not, can you shorten the hose and what would be the cost ?

Answer:
While the hose length will vary slightly between production runs, the hose length on these front brakes runs to around 900-1000mm (rear is usually 1500-1700mm).
We cannot shorten the hose length before dispatch, but the brakes are supplied with spare olives so you can have them shortened locally (it's usually best to wait until you have the brakes physically on the bike before determining what length of hose you can do without)
