Position adjustment 2x / 3x mode converter Building on the long legacy of Shimano Pedaling Dynamics (SPD) technology, the new XTR Trail pedal is engineered for the specific needs of aggressive trail riders everywhere, with an open, mud-shedding design and large pedalling platform for ultimate control.
Together with the saddle and the handlebar, pedals make up the holy trinity of contact points between man and machine. Drop the saddle or get behind it in a technical descent and those contact points are reduced to just two—hands and feet—with pedals accounting for the bulk of riders' balance and bike control.
With a wider, more stable stance backed up by widely braced bearings and nearly 10 times the effective contact area between the pedal platform and riders' shoes, XTR Trail pedals deliver unparalleled control when clipped in, and a reliable, extra-wide-area platform for those inevitable “in-between” moments that come with unpredictable trails.
Combine the large pedal/shoe contact area with a lower platform height—effectively moving the riders' foot closer to the center of the axle—and the power transfer and efficiency capabilities of XTR Trail is all-time, ready for any trail.

Great, until the drive side pedal needed thightening frequently, then the housing finally detached from spindle after 4 months (on a ride). Since bought the XT Trails equivalent with little weight difference & no such issues after 9 months.

Rated 1 out of 5 by Kahuna2 These pedals have no great features except for the look
Platform edge become very sharp after awhile. I had my left pedal came off the spindle and fortunate enough to have it replaced by dealer, after the replacement on my first ride, the right side came off this time, now have both sides replaced with new ones & currently monitoring the situation.

i went to service mine after about 8 weeks use, found separate ball bearings in the outer side (away from bike) like cone hubs have but minute, and a gay bush on the inside, after greaseing it all up it was almost imposable to get the shaft back in without pushing a long skinny seal out of place, ( this seal was like a bush also and had damage from dirt getting in already) so i didnt even bother with the other pedal, another 10 weeks have passed now one pedal has slop in it already

Rated 5 out of 5 by Dean2513 Excellent pedals, spot on for first time clipless pedal user
First time user of clipless pedals and I'm loving these. Matched with mavic alpine xl and was really easy to set up with lots of float that let's your feet just sit where they naturally want to sit. Really make a positive difference to my riding, especially those short, sharp technical climbs over obstacles. Only give 4 for quality as time will tell on the quality

What can I say about these that have not already been said by other riders. If you want the best trail pedal around get these. Nice and simple. A little expensive but XTR pedals are second to none and the pedal these are replacing are 8 year old XTR's

Rated 5 out of 5 The best pedal but worth getting on sale.
Was using the base model SPD before, these kill it

I would like to buy these pedals for the improved platform area contact over other Shimano SPD pedals, however, reading reviews of this pedal appears to reveal a common problem with one pedal, usually the drive side, becoming detached from its spindle. This could have very serious consequences mid-ride! Has this issue been addressed and sorted?
