Position adjustment 2x / 3x mode converter Building on the long legacy of Shimano Pedaling Dynamics (SPD) technology, the new XTR Trail pedal is engineered for the specific needs of aggressive trail riders everywhere, with an open, mud-shedding design and large pedalling platform for ultimate control.
Together with the saddle and the handlebar, pedals make up the holy trinity of contact points between man and machine. Drop the saddle or get behind it in a technical descent and those contact points are reduced to just two—hands and feet—with pedals accounting for the bulk of riders' balance and bike control.
With a wider, more stable stance backed up by widely braced bearings and nearly 10 times the effective contact area between the pedal platform and riders' shoes, XTR Trail pedals deliver unparalleled control when clipped in, and a reliable, extra-wide-area platform for those inevitable “in-between” moments that come with unpredictable trails.
Combine the large pedal/shoe contact area with a lower platform height—effectively moving the riders' foot closer to the center of the axle—and the power transfer and efficiency capabilities of XTR Trail is all-time, ready for any trail.

Rated 3 out of 5 by CountryDave XT are better value
After less than 12 months use, one of the pedals almost came off as a result of the end of the spindle breaking. Luckily I was less than 1km from home. A common problem it seems.
Have replaced with XT pedals and have had no problems. More rugged and better value for my money.

Great, until the drive side pedal needed thightening frequently, then the housing finally detached from spindle after 4 months (on a ride). Since bought the XT Trails equivalent with little weight difference & no such issues after 9 months.

Rated 1 out of 5 by Kahuna2 These pedals have no great features except for the look
Platform edge become very sharp after awhile. I had my left pedal came off the spindle and fortunate enough to have it replaced by dealer, after the replacement on my first ride, the right side came off this time, now have both sides replaced with new ones & currently monitoring the situation.

I would like to buy these pedals for the improved platform area contact over other Shimano SPD pedals, however, reading reviews of this pedal appears to reveal a common problem with one pedal, usually the drive side, becoming detached from its spindle. This could have very serious consequences mid-ride! Has this issue been addressed and sorted?
