What chainring should I buy

I need to replace my outer chainring. It's a FSA Vero 50 and I can't find one anywhere. What would be compatible, or if I need to change the chainset, what will be compatible with my 9 speed Tiagre triple.

Answer:
We do not stock any 9 speed compatible FSA chainrings as 10 and 11 speed are the most common standards these days and 9 speed is not widely produced.

if you want to change your chainset please drop us an email stating the make, model and year of your bike to tech@chainreactioncycles.com and we can help you further.

Answer:
Your Force chainset will have a BCD of 110mm, the 105 30t will be 74mm BCD so won't fit.
The smallest inner ring we have for 110mm BCD would be 34t though Shimano rings with SRAM may not give as smooth a shift as SRAM/SRAM

Answer:
The smallest chainring you can fit is 24t as the jump from a 22 up to the 38t would be too much for your mech to handle.

Answer:
Sram XX1 and X01 chainrings are not interchangeable as they have different BCDs (Bolt Circle Diameters).

Bolt Circle Diameter or BCD is the diameter of the circle that goes through the centre of all of the bolts on your chainring. This dimension is usually measured in millimetres.

The X01 chainrings and chainsets iare available in 94 and 104mm BCD options and XX1 is available with a 74mm BCD.

Answer:
No; the bolt circle defines the minimum number of teeth that can be had in a chainring. For example, if you look at these 130mm chainrings, you'll find that 38 teeth is the smallest number of teeth available. It's not possible to make a chainring with fewer teeth because the chainring bolts would get in the way. So there's little to be gained by looking around for a 36 or 34 tooth 130mm bolt circle chainring. They don't exist because they can't exist. 33 is the smallest number of teeth for 110mm bolt circle (compact) rings, so to run something like a 34 on the inner you would need to switch down to a Compact crankset.

Changing your cassette ratio may offer you a better range for climbing, rather than having to change the whole chainset.

Fitting a double chainring on a Brompton

I have a pre 2013 Brompton with a 3 speed hub gear and a 44T chainring on which is a
guard fixed by 5 bolts with an approximate BCD of 120mm. I'd like to lower my gears by
fitting a second chainring (and change manually). Any ideas for a cheap and easy solution?

Answers

Answer:
This would only be possible is you were to change the crankset for a double crankset and were willing to either carry two chains of varying lengths or have the patience to 'break' the chain every time you wanted to change the chainring it is running on.

This is because a hub gear has no derailleur to take up the chain slack, so once the chain retention is set, you cannot alter chainring sizes unless will to select one of the chain 'solutions' above.

If you would like to discuss this further; please contact our Technical Department below:

I need to find the replacement INNER ring, which is a 32 tooth with 104mm bolt holes, I believe it is shimano part # Y1MM98130, I cannot find it on your website.
I have added the outer triple chainring from your website as a guide to the inner ring I require.

Answer:
Unfortunately this would not be possible as the Bolt Circle Diameters are different between 'Compact' and 'Double' crankset gear ratios.

The chainrings cannot physically fit to the crankset.

Answer:
Shimano does not produce stars at 110mm (for a compact) more than 50T, but you can find and use other manufacturers. For example BBB or FSA. but pay attention to BCD = 110mm
