Rated 5 out of 5 by Value this is excellent value for money, great quality product 30 May 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Solid product This product is for all road use and basic MTB but nothing too harsh. Very good quick shifting when paired with SRAM x4 shifters. 04 April 2014
Rated 3 out of 5 by You get what you pay for My 29er seems to always take a beating, and recently I replaced a bent X5 rear mech with this entry level X3 product. I felt there was no point in going for higher end products if they often end up getting broken or damaged out on the trail. The mech is fine and works with a 9 speed cassette, but the jockey wheels are very stiff and non-adjustable. I freed everything up with some GT85 and will ride it until it breaks, but in hindsight will probably go for a higher end product in future. 05 January 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Fantastic value I've been using this for 2 years on city bike (8spd single front chainring). Shifting is smooth and reliable, also easy to adjust. Just remember to get 1:1 shifters. 06 November 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Very Happy Got this and the SRAM 3x7 Shifters. The derailleur was simple to setup and was pretty much bang on with only very very minimal adjustment needed to get the shifting perfect, all in all a great mech for the money. All I can see that's not great is the jockey wheels, they are not removable for maintenace.....other than that I'm more than happy. 15 November 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Works like a X5 This rear derailleur works like my last X5. I bought this because I broke the X5 and I wasn't able to spend the money for a new X5 but now I can't see any difference on how they work. The only difference is that X5 are built with stronger materials I think. 23 June 2012
Rated 4 out of 5 by Nice Derailleur I really like the Sram Derailleurs. Shifting is very accurate, quality is very good and they look very nice. The x3 series works perfect, but for the low price you have to take some things into account. The pulleys are not replaceable (unscrewable bolts), the weight is not 210gr (something around 270) and you have to live with some plastic. But hey, what do you expect? It's well assembled, function is precise and the price is very low. You may take a look at the x4 derailleur. For a similar price you get replaceable pulleys and maybe a bit better quality materials. Comparing to another big brand, I always prefer the Sram shifting in any range. More ergonomic shifters, much more precision and nice detail solutions, from the low end to the top level components. For easy useage is this a well working product. 21 December 2009

Answer:
No; Shimano and SRAM use different cable pull ratios on their rear derailleurs (2:1 and 1:1 respectively) so you can only use SRAM shifters with a SRAM rear derailleur, and Shimano with Shimano.
