X5 Rear 9-Speed Derailleur

1:1 - 1:1 Actuation™ is superior by design. Every unit of cable you pull moves the derailleur the same amount. Actuation stays precise and fluid slogging through mud, bouncing off rocks, rutting through roots — wherever you find yourself, whatever conditions you're in. It's dependable. Tolerant. Easiest to set up. Easiest to adjust. And, not coincidentally, the top choice of the top MTB riders. Got it? Good.

Exact Actuation - When we launched our road technology from scratch we reapplied our MTB proven SRAM 1:1 actuation ratio (shifter cable travel : derailleur movement) for 10 speed rear shifting. EA helps to simplify/stabilize the uneasy act of balancing rear derailleur hanger design, tight cog spacing and exact cable tension. The result: the easiest index shifting system to set up and it stays that way.

MatchMaker Compatible - Save weight and clutter on the bar with MatchMaker. This system holds AVID® levers, a number of SRAM triggers and the RockShox PushLoc control—all with one tidy, light clamp.

Features:

  • SRAM Exact Actuation for Precise & Dependable Shifting Performance
  • Direct Route Technology For Lighter Effort Shifting.
  • Material: Alloy B-Knuckle, Alloy Links, High Strength Grilon Composite P-Knuckle
  • Cage: Long
  • 36-Tooth Cassette Compatibility

Rated 4 out of 5 by 24 reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great, for it's price I've been running this dérailleur for about 4 months now and so far it's been pretty much amazing. I've never had a problem with it and it's held up fairly well, it shifts pretty much instantly for me, so I'd very much recommend this because of it's amazing value for money! 13 October 2014
Rated 3 out of 5 by OK for the price This is a low cost rear speed - it is OK. When you don't want to crash a X9 on your DH-bike, take the X5... 21 August 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by No fuss cheap Mech Purchased the X5 rear mech as a direct replacement for my sons Carrera Banshee. He rides pretty hard and is always crashing & face planting. The previous X5 lasted for 3 years and needed very little attention, until it found a boulder that is. The new X5 looks slightly updated, was installed and set up easily. It's a no fuss cheap workhorse. 15 August 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Pas mal ! Bon dérailleur, solide et efficace ! Utilisé pour faire paris londres en velo, il n'a jamais failli ! 17 July 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Cumple su función Aún siendo básica, aguanta perfectamente todas las exigencias de esfuerzo en BTT 10 July 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by great back up i had this lieing in my car boot and when i crashed i bent my hanger and then shifted into first and my wheel ripped the SRAM x9 mech right off a little walk to my car 10 minutes to fix and BOOM!!!! bomming downhill after the push up 07 June 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Very good product for the price Very good product for the price advgafjhdfvhyfcvbht 22 May 2014
Rated 1 out of 5 by Cheap and fragile!!!! I bought this to replace my sram x9. I have gone through 2 of theses in the space of 3 weeks . Both of the 2 times it broke in the same place. Do not buy this if you want your derailleur to last anymore than 2 weeks. The only good thing I can think of is, to have this as a get you home one because it is cheap to buy. 17 May 2014

Answer:
As a general rule of thumb, the number of chainrings on your crankset determines the length of rear cage you will need (as this dictates how much the rear arm needs to be able to move/ reach across). A single ring system can use a Short cage derailleur; a double ring can use Medium, and a triple ring setup can use the Long cage.

Answer:
It depends on the diameter of your cassette (nubber of teeth on the largest cog) and the design of the crankset (single/double/tripple-speed)

Answer:
Further to the advice you already have been given, if you're undecided between cage lengths always go for the longer option. It's far better to use only part of a greater range of movement than not to have enough movement!

Answer:
Depends on the size of your front chain rings.

Normally, if you have 1-2 front chain rings you can go with short, if you have 3 then you need to go with long.

Answer:
You forgot medium cage.

The broader the range of gears, the longer a cage (distance from one pulley wheel to the other) you'll need. Short is only for road gears (which you CAN put on a mountain bike, technically) in the back and 2 chainrings on the front. Medium is for mountain gears on the back and 2 chainrings on the front (with the third chainring replaced by a bash ring, typically). You'll need a long cage if you have full mountain gears on the back and you're running 3 chainrings on the front.

Answer:
This derailleur requires a 9-speed Narrow chain to fit through the cage and ultimately; to shift.

An 8-speed chain will not work with this mech.

Answer:
In general (There are a couple of bodges around for certain combinations) Shimano shifters will only work with a Shimano Rear Mech and SRAM shifters only with a SRAM Rear Mech.

SRAM shifters will work a Shimano Front Mech though as the cable pull ratio is the same.

Shimano and Sram front mechs/shifters are compatible. Rear mechs/shifters are not as Sram/Shimano use different lever pull ratios.

Answer:
If by dropdown you mean the Mech Hanger, the small aluminium part that fixes to your bike frame and you fix your rear mech to, then this is not included with a new rear mech as the hanger is specific to your make and model of bike.

I've attached a photo of a typical mech hangers to try to explain.
