The Truvativ HammerSchmidt AM crankset could very well revolutionize bicycle drivetrains from this point forward by eliminating that last bastion of low-tech: the front derailleur. Gone are the days of jammed or dropped chains, missed shifts and bent cages in favour of a seamless and bulletproof system that magically ekes two gears out of a single chainring in any condition, under any load (or even no load), any time you wish.

A system of planetary gears contained within HammerSchmidt's surprisingly compact and thoroughly sealed housing yields an 'Overdrive' 1:1.6 gear ratio. Thus, a 24T ring provides the same range as a 24/38T. All along, the chain is held on tight by the included chain guide and you even gain more ground clearance, too. If you're envisioning downhill security with all-mountain versatility, you're on the right track.

Even better, this wizardry comes with only a modest weight penalty and virtually no increase in Q-factor. At 1623g, a complete HammerSchmidt AM system adds less than 180g to a comparable setup using a Truvativ Stylo two-ring crank and chain guide and is more reliable, tough as nails and way, way cooler.

The Truvativ HammerSchmidt AM Crankset is set up as an ISCG 05 suitable model but comes supplied with the ISCG Old/’03 Seal Disk to allow you to convert this to suit this style of ISCG Frame tabs), and also requires the matching proprietary bottom bracket and trigger shifter.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent! I love this unit and i can say it will be on any DH bike i buy in the future, it came on my frame and it really is the best thing out for a bike with alot of travel and no lockout if you want to do XC as well, i can keep up with my friend on his XC bike despite having 10kgs on him and 8" travel at each end, i find on a run ill keep it in 8/9 rear and just flick the crank between high and low. its so smooth and instant, but it does require cleaning to keep it reliable. 21 July 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by First rate ownership experience I just purchased my second Am set. The first set which i am still using has proved to be a real joy. As many people have said already, it is reliable and it is the ANSWER to all crank and front deraileur weaknesses. All that talk about excellent BB clearance, optimised chain line, protectionand chain security, instant shifts.... all true. and the weight , also true. but its just some hundreds of grammes..... this is the crankset for the real world users 24 April 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by The one crankset I use on all my bikes. This is the 5th set that I have gotten for a friend's project bike. You may think it's nuts to have this on any bike because of the weight; think again. Your chainguide almost made up for the difference and with this Hammer, I can climb almost any upslopes. It's easy to maintain, and clean, and very tidy as a crankset. Chain drop is no longer part of the worries while riding. 11 February 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Luvely jubbly Comes as OEM so don't expect packaging and instructions or a shifter. Check you have the correct ISCG fixing before you order. Speak to or e-mail Alan at customer services first. Although it is well below retail price it is the genuine article. I bought the 175mm version - the difference between 170mm and 175mm is only 0.2 of an inch! It is not exactly bolt on and may need a bit of skill to do it right. I had to drill out the three ISCG holes in the Seal Disc as mine was ISCG 03 and not ISCG 05. I had to get three mounting bolts from the E-Thirteen chain guard spares section. Read up about this item on the internet before bolting it on as it is easy to mess it up. You can use your old chain ring shifter if you are lucky - new ones are expensive. Having said that, read the previous comments - brilliant piece of kit. It actually weighed less than the stuff it replaced! 05 September 2012
Rated 1 out of 5 by great idea this is a fantastic crankset best ive ever had on a mtb, but its expensive when it goes wrong, and if you bike in all conditions it will. srams back up is terrible they fixed my 5 month old one only after a fight about using wrong grease (srams £25 grease) saying its wear and tear, and also saying it must be fitted wrong (came on a brand new cannyon)? so by only if you realy whant it because theres no warraty. 13 July 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by The last crank you'll ever need! Truly amazing, Brilliant, revolutionary piece of engineering. Sure its a little more expensive but you definitely get what you pay for. I dont know why i held out so long before buying it. The crank to end all cranks. 03 July 2011
Rated 5 out of 5 by Fantastic Why of why did I not have a set of these before. I now laugh everytime I hear my mates grinding gears half way up a steep hill as they attempt to switch from middle to granny. Other advantages are shorter rear mech, no chain slap or slack, better clearance, shift when you need to under power, bash guard, less chain wear as its more stright, chain dosent bounce off the rings. Im now always in the correct gear, never miss a stroke under power. Plus its well made and just keeps working. Ive been riding mine all winter twice a week in the slop. I took it apart to see if any dirt was in there and it was fine. I reckon a quick clean and lube after the winter if you ride it in mud is all you need. In the summer you wont need to do anything. They are expensive, but if your specing a bike from new, then its not that much. You will never have to fiddle with a bloody front mech again. Buy it and love it. 29 January 2011
Rated 5 out of 5 by best ever this is the best crank ever!!!!!!!!! 07 June 2010

Answer:
SRAM has approved compatibility of SRAM 10 speed chains for use with all Truvativ Hammerschmidt cranksets. No design changes were required which will allow for seamless 2x10 integration of existing Hammerschmidt cranksets.

Answer:
The Hammerschmidt crankset uses a specific shifter, which operates in the opposite direction and with a different cable pull to the stanard derailleur shifters. You should therefore only use the Hammerschmidt shifter with the Hammerschmidt cranks.
