USE Thermoplastic Shim

The USE shim system allows you to fit a post into virtually any frame size. Our shims are made to 100mm length and are longer than other shims on the market. This gives your seat post much better support inside the frame. All shims are designed with a "top lip" to stop shim sliding into the frame.

USE Thermoplastic Shim Features:

  • The Thermoplastic shims area a larger size, and are machined to very high tolerances from "filled" engineering thermoplastic UPVC. This keeps the weight down, as the shims get thicker.

Buy USE Thermoplastic Shim from Chain Reaction Cycles, the worlds largest online bicycle store.

Rated 3.5 out of 5 by 27 reviewers.
Rated 1 out of 5 by Badly fitting product - terrible diameter tolerance First negative review I ever give a product, but there's always a first, I suppose. Thankfully it happened with a cheap bit of kit, and not something 20 times more expensive. However, the gist is that this shim is not adequately machined/produced. I have used alloy shims without an issue till now, the diameter was spot on. However, for carbon on carbon, I decided to go plastic, to avoid cold freezing/seizures. Well, the plastic shim looks nice, it feels nice but fits like a piece of lard on a souffle. I could not get the seatpost past 3 or 4 cm down. Used carbon paste, nothing, used grease, nothing, used a rubber mallet to gently tap it in, got it stuck. Thankfully I was able to get it out by twisting the saddle, but I thought I'd ruined the carbon seatpost and/or frame (which hopefully I haven't, although only fatigue and time will tell) I tried an alloy shim I had as a spare, and surprise, surprise, the seatpost slid in without a problem. I tried the plastic shim on an aluminium frame with the same problem, so, bottom line, do not buy, or if you do, keep the box so you can return it if it turns out to be as bad as mine. I threw my box away, so basically I'm now stuck with a useless piece of plastic which I cannot return. 02 June 2014
Rated 1 out of 5 by Unsuitable material for purpose. I come from engineering and checked all measurements with a set of dial calipers. Was over-sized by 0.2 mm. This still did not compensate for able bite of the seat post. The problem here is plastics commonly have a non-friction bearing quality that will aid movement, and I definitely experienced this. This product falls way short to the grip ability of an alloy shim. 24 May 2014

Rated 4 out of 5 by Работает, но... Термопластик - капризный материал, примерно близкий к прочности алюминиевых сплавов... надо быть внимательным к поверхностям педседела и рамы и точнее настраивать усилие затяжки. С учетом цены и широкого выбора типоразмеров - хорошо. 24 April 2014
Rated 3 out of 5 by 05 March 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Does what it says on the tin. Before purchasing I was worried about how this would fit (having read contrary reviews) & whether it would be visible over the collar. But because of it is a negligible price & CRC's great returns policy I just bought it. My concerns were unfounded, it fits great, does the job & is not at all visible. I now have the seatpost I wanted in the bike I want it in-the 27.2 to 31.6 difference is now just added comfort!! 16 February 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Installs and Works great Bought a 2nd pc for my Mountain bike. The first piece fitted and worked flawlessly on my road bike. Installs easily and no slipping at all after 1000km 09 February 2014
Rated 2 out of 5 by Bad sizing? Ive had a few of these in the past, never with any issues. However this new 31.6 - 27.2 seems to wobble around in the seat tube of my frame with the seatpost inserted. The frame is a new BFe so that's not the issue. Measuring using digital calipers the size comes out at 31.4 which would explain a lot. It appears to be a bit of bad machining? Going to see if CRC can do anything about a replacement, maybe in the 31.8 size?? 08 February 2014

Answer:
You need to indicate both measurements when ordering a shim. You'll need a 27.2-31.6 shim to get you post functional. Bear in mind that sometimes it is hard to get certain sizes of shims.

Answer:
The exact measurement of the frame seat tube is required to advise on the correct fitting of a shim.

If you can supply the internal diameter of the frame seat tube to our Technical Department; we can supply the information you require -

Do you have 31.6 to 34.9mm?

I would like to use carbon seatpost on my bike which is 31.6mm seatpost in 34.9mm seattube. I need the thermoplastic shim to make sure my carbon seatpost did not blend in corrosion caused by aluminum shim. Do you have USE thermoplastic 31.6 to 34.9mm shim? Thanks.

Answer:
We currently do not have the shim you need. we only have the smaller shim ranges. The jump of 3.3mm is larger than anything we have in stock.

Answer:
To shim a 30.9mm post out to meet a 31.6mm tube requires a 0.7mm shim, which would make it only 0.35mm thick. No such shim is available as far as I am aware. Fizzy drink cans are usually around 0.2mm thick so you may be able to make a DIY shim in the interim, but I would recommend a new 31.6mm seatpost as a better option.

Answer:
This combination would require a shim to bridge the 1.4mm gap (0.7mm thick); a shim of this size is not available to best of our knowledge.
