Vitus Bikes Sommet I Suspension Bike

What to do when you reach the summit? We say point it down again, and have yourself a blast.

New for 2013 Vitus introduce the Sommet range, a big-mountain bruiser geared for gravity Enduro action with phenomenal pedalling characteristics for epic back-country riding. Built around our custom hydroformed 6061 aluminium frame with 150mm of rear travel delivered via our Vitus V-Link four-bar suspension system and featuring a top-notch components package that’s ready for the thrills and spills of All-Mountain assaults.

Brought to you exclusively by Vitus Bikes and Chainreactioncycles.com, the Sommet I yearns to be let loose on adrenaline-fuelled gravity runs.

150mm travel V-Link frame and RockShox Lyrik RC forks

Our lightweight hydroformed multi-butted, heat treated 6061-T6 aluminium frame features 150mm of rear wheel travel via a four-bar V-Link activated suspension platform which eliminates pedal bob yet remains fully active at all times. Suspension travel is controlled by a RockShox Monarch RT3 air shock which offers infinite adjustability and silky smooth performance. All pivots run on sealed cartridge bearings providing supple performance with low maintenance. A replaceable derailleur hanger comes as standard.

Up front a RockShox Lyrik RC Solo Air forks deliver 160mm of buttery smooth, infinitely adjustable travel. A tapered steerer and 20mm Maxle thru-axle mean precise, positive tracking through corners, rock gardens and any obstacle the trial may throw up.

SRAM Groupset

The SRAM 1x10 groupset combines an X9 shifter with an X9 Type 2 rear derailleur and Truvativ Descendant 1.1 chainset to provide crisp, flawless gear selections every time. A SRAM XO chainguide comes as standard on the Sommet I making sure the chain stays in place when the dial turns to Gnarl.

Alpine descents require brakes you can count on, so we’ve fitted high-end Avid Elixir 7 hydraulic discs with 180mm rotors front and rear for powerful, fade-free braking performance.

Easton Haven Wheelset & Finishing Kit

A highlight of the Sommet I’s spec list is the lightweight but bombproof Easton Haven wheelset, specifically designed for the rigours of AM and Enduro riding. With a 20mm thru-axle front hub and 142mm x 12mm thru-axle rear, stiffness and rigidity are uncompromised. High-volume Maxxis High Roller tyres combine predictable handling with low rolling resistance for complete confidence in all conditions.

To complete the package we’ve added an Easton Haven stem and seatpost to complement the wheelset, with Vitus bars, grips and saddle providing the finishing touches.

The Vitus Sommet I. Our summit. Your starting line.

For 2013 Vitus is pleased to extend its association with Seán Kelly by sponsoring the An Post Seán Kelly UCI Continental Race Team which will be riding Vitus Bikes at European and Pro Tour road race events.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Best bike Ive ever owned I am very happy I decided to go for this bike. Usually when I buy a bike I end up spending another 50% of the cost on upgrading all the parts. Not with the Sommet 1. Chain Reaction ship these bikes 90% assembled so setup out of the box took only minutes. Once the bars were on and I added pedals, I set the sag on the forks and shock, and I was away! From the very first ride I was amazed at how dialled everything felt. The Elixir 7 brakes give you confidence to put the bike to the test on descents. The Lyrik fork with 20mm thru axle really feels stiff and precise through the roughest rocky sections, leaving the Monarch RT3 to steady the equally rigid V-Bar link rear end. The Pedal setting works a treat and allows smooth powerful climbing back to the top to do it again, twice as fast, jumping higher and hitting bigger each time! I have gained so much confidence instantly on this bike, and I would honestly never recommend any other bike I have owned as much as I would recommend the Sommet 1. This bike just suits my style of riding perfectly. I love to ride DH trails at Queenstowns gondola assisted bike park, but also ride the XC trails and sub-alpine singletrack. All this whilst being ridden to work and back 5 times a week. And to top it off it just looks awesome, great finish on a well thought out bike with a top spec. 28 September 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Sommet 1 As my riding style has changed I felt as I had gone as far as I could with my faithful Stumpjumper FSRs 120mm travel, so for a while now I have been looking into a good enduro replacement but also something that could still climb as well as my old fSR I finally had a shortlist of a stumpy enduro, Nukeproof Mega and on one E lGuapo after further reiewing and lack of stock available on the other 2 I had this down to the Sommet 1 and the El Guapo, (which is hard when you consider you cannot go to the LBS and have a test ride on my 2 short-listed bikes) Anyway after reading bike radars reviews I went with my gut feeling which swayed me to The Vitus as seemed to be more of a do it all for my riding style. All I will say is don't worry about not being able to test ride, I really made a great choice and cant believe how good this bike is, the bike is a blast on the uphill s and is really fast as well and fly s on the down hills although TBH I have not fully ripped it on the descents as am still getting over a recent broken wrist, only criticism I have is the lack of dropper seatpost. So dont worry, if you want a great piece of kit and the bargain of a lifetime (at the sale price) and something that puts a big stupid grin on your face, buy one of these while you can, before it gets too popular :-) 22 September 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Very capable solid built bike! Had a full day of enduro riding on the bike today. So far, I am very impressed. Out of the box, the setup is very good for the money. SRAM x0, x9, elixir, rockshox, and easton is all top of the range stuff. Although the frame is not as refined and as well tested as most of the top manufacturers, it is a very solid frame with clean welds, nice paintwork, and good angles. The bike rides great, suspension works well and you can really push it on the downhills. I have not noticed any rear end flex, even when pushing hard in the rough stuff. The Sommet climbs well too, shock has a lockout for pedalling which is handy. If you are after a well priced, solid built enduro/play bike, I wouldn't look anywhere else. It is a very capable bike and I am so glad I bought it! For the price, you are getting a LOT of bike! 14 September 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great bike at great price. I decided on the vitus sommet 1 as my first full suss bike after doing lots of research and shopping around. I was slightly worried about the bike only having 10 gears, as i was going from climbing hills on a good quality hard tail, but found i had no need to be. I've just returned from a long weekend in wales and really put the bike through its paces, we did over 50 miles and climbed over 11,000ft, taking on cadair idris mountain, penmachno trail and the beast of brenin. The bike was great at climbing, and although you have to dig in at points it's satisfying to know you didn't go in to the granny gears once you get to the top. Then there's the downhills where this bike soaked up everything in its path, and as I grew in confidence with it, I felt I could attack the trails instead of just surviving them as I did on the old hard tail. In summary this bike is great and great value for money, the only thing I have added is a dropper which is essential! 09 September 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 At £1599 this bike is incredible value! I decided it was time for my son to have a full sus bike, he looked at various bikes, some at twice this price that did not have a spec anywhere near as good as this Vitus. We also had read the MBUK review which praised it to the max. So my son decided it was the bike for him. The bike arrived quickly, but as we knew it would only have 1x10 drive train, so I also bough XT 2x10 chainset and front mech as well as an x9 shifter plus added a dropper seatpost. Now this bike is pretty much perfect, it rides beautifully and looks stunning, so what are you waiting for? buy yourself the MTB bargain of the year! 06 September 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Climbs well, descends even better Climbs like an XC bike, descends like a DH bike - this is as close as it gets to the best of both worlds and at a ridiculous price considering how well specced it is. Let's not forget that CRC has a lot riding on the Vitus brand and the effort they've put in to this bike really shows. Can't comment on how well the bike lasts since i've only ridden it a few times, but so far the bike is stiff, solid and confidence-inspiring on the downhills, yet comfortable and manageable on the ride back up. I appreciate that people may be nervous of the relatively new brand, but i decided to take the plunge and have to say that i'm impressed so far 04 September 2013

Returns policy

I have never purchased a bike online and wondered what the returns policy is if the bike doesn't fit or isn't suitable. I understand you have a 365 day return but I wasn't sure if it applied to bikes.

Also, would it be possible to add a front derailleur to this bike?
