    The Zipp 454 NSW Carbon Clincher is an evolution in the world of  competitive road wheels.     Optimised Aerodynamic Drag Reduction

    Featuring a wind-tunnel proven, performance enhancing biometric 53/58mm  Sawtooth rim profile, the 454 NSW design provides aerodynamic drag and side  force reduction to levels that other wheels cannot achieve. The AeroBalance and  Hyperfoil fins help slice through the air for optimised efficiency and the  inner diameter of the rim features HexFin ABLC dimples to keep stability and  airflow at its maximum. These technologies work together seamlessly thanks to  their ability to shed air away from the rim surface; it is so successful that  these technologies will feature on all future Zipp wheels.

    All this added aerodynamic finesse and drag reduction leads to exceptional rider stability and more efficient power transfer to the road. The unique rim profile combats the air vortex, which slows other riders down; the Zipp NSW design saves energy, provides confidence inspiring stability in gusty, strong crosswinds and transfers more power output from the rider to the road than any other wheel on the market.

    Exceptional Ratchet Efficiency

    At the heart of this 454 NSW wheel is the Zipp Cognition hub, which is  the ultimate in hub technology. A conventional hub effectively functions like a  drum brake once the rider stops pedalling and begins to coast, the drag caused  by the freehub ratchet and the hub shell is a considerable efficiency loss. The  Cognition hub engages as normal when you’re putting the power down. However,  when you stop pedalling the ratchets are pulled away from the driver via powerful  internal magnets; it effectively it puts the bike in neutral gear. The moment  you rotate the pedals forward, the ratchet will engage once-more and apply the  power instantly.

    • Cognition: The ultimate in Zipp hub technology. Every time a conventional hub set starts to coast, friction within the freehub ratchet mechanism works like a drum brake to slow the rider down. The drag between hub shell and driver body during coasting is considered as efficiency loss, especially for road wheels. High drag also can significantly contribute to chain-dropping issues. The drag torque drives the cassette clockwise so the chain gets loose on the load side. The solution? The rear Cognition hub with AxialClutch technology reduces drag by disengaging the ratchet mechanism when coasting. It then uses magnets to re-engage once the rider starts pedalling.
    • Showstopper: Showstopper is a complimenting pairing of a directional, moulded-in, texture with silicon carbide particles suspended in the surface resin.  The current media blast process applied to all Zipp rims increases the surface roughness of the brake track providing the rider with consistent and responsive braking. In order to improve this for the wettest of rides, Zipp have introduced a moulded-in groove specifically tuned for the Zipp Tangente Platinum Pro EVO Brake Pad. The grooves have been optimized to interact with leading edge (relative to the rotation of the wheel) of the brake pad and the four cooling channels. The leading edge of the pad and first two channels efficiently wipe water and debris outward, cleaning and drying the braking surface, while the second two cooling channels have maximum interference with the grooves allowing greater braking force than a smooth rim. The cleaning effects of the groove and pad interaction improve brake feel and consistency even in dry conditions.
    • ImPress: Zipp’s ImPress graphics technology prints graphics directly on the wheel, which allows the dimples to do what they were designed to achieve, to control vortex shedding and the rate at which air sheds off the wheel. Managing this is crucial to stability. ImPress graphics also give NSW a distinctive stealthy look.
    • Hexfin Aerodynamic Boundary Layer Control (ABLC): The Sawtooth dimple design consists of 12 nodes that are specifically clocked to start aerodynamic shearing at a rate of 50hz at a rider speed of 20mph. Sawtooth accomplishes this by inducing small sheet vortices that shed at a low magnitude, but at a higher natural frequency, thus decreasing the laminar bubble effect on the aerodynamically shielded side of the rim’s profile to further reduce high yaw drag and improve crosswind stability.
