Before designing the Hydraulics™ Reservoir we took a close look at limitations of other systems already on the market.

It quickly struck us that water doesn’t behave favourably in a completely flexible bag. It has a mind of its own and this flexibility mirrors the natural liquid form, making a full reservoir very hard to insert into a loaded pack. Once in the pack the problems don’t stop, the cylindrical shape of a full reservoir will frequently bend the backpanel of your pack, making it less stable and more uncomfortable. We observed people walking, skiing and riding with hydration hoses swinging free as they went about their activity. There had to be a design solution that addressed these limitations? First, filling and inserting the Osprey Hydraulics™ reservoir became easy by including a lightweight handle down the spine. Second, say goodbye to backpanel bending with our unique Osprey Hydraulics™ anatomically shaped back plate that is welded to the side of the reservoir facing the users back. Finally, we incorporated an ingenious magnet system into the bite valve with a simple ¼ turn on/off, which means the hose and bite valve remains secured when not needed, but will deliver instant liquid on demand. We made the whole system from taste-free anti-microbial materials able to withstand either freezing or boiling water.
