Instructions for proper use:

   
1. Back off the handle to make room for the chain to be fitted to the tool
   
2. Back off the adjustable support screw at the rear of the tool
   
3. Place the chain on the rear teeth of the tool (nearest the adjustable support)
   
4. Tighten the adjusting support screw until it  comes firmly into contact with the back of the chain
   
5. Turn the handle of the tool gently until the tool pin comes into contact with the centre of the chain pin
   
6. If the two pins are not lined up, back off the handle and re-position the chain in the tool
   
7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 until the two pins are aligned
   
8. Now firmly tighten the handle to push the pin out, splitting the chain
   
9. You can use the locking barrel to prevent pushing the chain pin right out of the other side. This makes it much easier to join a chain and push the pin back in again. (Note that you can only do this on certain types of chain – Check with the manufacturer for details)
   
10. The only time you would use the front teeth on the tool is to loosen a tight link slightly – If you try to split a chain using them, you will break them off
